Before the next adventure, give San Gil a morning. Start at Parque La Libertad, one block from the hostel: century-old ceiba trees, a fountain and the winged statue of Chief Guanentá.

On the square's north-west corner stands the Catedral de la Santa Cruz, begun in 1769. From there drop down to the Río Fonce and the malecón, home to El Gallineral, a park on an island between the river and the Curití stream.

Finish at the market hall, all stall chatter and fruit. The front desk hands out maps and tips to plan your route.

What it feels like

A big town going about its day: coffee in the square, motorbikes, mass and market.

What we don't know yet

We'd rather say so than make it up. The team confirms these with the operator:

  • El Gallineral opening hours and entry
  • Market opening hours

Ask the front desk

  • Can you mark a route on the map?
  • Where's a good coffee or juice nearby?
  • Which day is the market liveliest?

Safety & season

Heat and hills: water and a hat. As in any town, keep an eye on your things in busy spots.
