The Fonce isn't some faraway postcard river: it runs right through town, past El Gallineral park and the riverside malecón. According to the town hall, San Gil opened Colombia's first rafting route in 1996, and this is still where most people get their first taste.

You climb into the raft with helmet, vest and paddle, the guide yells 'forward!', and suddenly you're soaked and laughing with strangers. Between rapids come calm stretches for watching the green banks slide by.

The front desk can book it with local operators. Ask which section and length they'd suggest for your level.

What it feels like

Like a wet roller coaster you paddle as a team: short bursts of chaos and a lot of shared shouting.

Ideal for

  • Your first rafting trip
  • Groups who just met at the hostel
  • A hot day
  • Adrenaline without a long drive

What we don't know yet

We'd rather say so than make it up. The team confirms these with the operator:

  • Which operator and exact section
  • Actual duration on the day
  • Minimum age
  • Whether transport and lunch are included

Ask the front desk

  • How is the river running this week?
  • Which section do you suggest if I've never rafted?
  • What clothes and shoes should I bring?
  • Are photos or video included?

Safety & season

The Fonce's level changes with the rains. Only raft with authorised operators and qualified guides, always wear helmet and vest, and follow the safety briefing.
